IPC Training and Certification Program Using IPC-7711 and IPC-7721

When a PCB has been fully populated, and it is then tested and fails, the results are costly. The three obvious choices are to scrap it, send it in for repairs, or send it to the customer as is and take the consequences later. None of these options is ideal. There is, however, another option. The IPC-7711 and IPC-7721 Rework, Repair and Modification Training and Certification Program will allow your company to train your own employees to fix the problem in-house.

This program, based on a train-the-trainer model, teaches techniques that are approved by industry on surface mount and through-hole rework, and laminate, conductor and land repair. It also provides a skills-oriented training program that is flexible and provides training materials that enables qualified representatives from a company to train operators on various procedures from the IPC-7711 and IPC-7721 Rework of Electronic Assemblies/Repair and Modification of Printed Boards and Electronic Assemblies.

Companies wanting to participate in the IPC Rework, Repair and Modification Program send their candidates to approved training centers to undergo 40 hours of intensive, hands-on training. Candidates who pass the skills demonstrations and theory exam are certified by IPC as trainers and are equipped with materials, visuals and a lesson plan that can be used to train Certified IPC Specialists. The materials cater for 9 different repair and assembly rework modules. The IPC 7711 and 7721 Certified IPC Trainer certification is valid for two years.

The IPC trainer course covers repair and rework techniques that are commonly used in industry. The IPC Specialist training is modular with only the first module, Common Procedures, being compulsory. Other Certified IPC Specialist modules are selected depending on a company’s requirements. Certified IPC Specialists certification is also valid for two years.

Topics Included in the training:

  • Product classifications, materials, tools and skill levels
  • Component installation and land preparation
  • Basic through hole surface mount component removal
  • Handling electronic assemblies
  • Primary heating methods: convective, conductive and others
  • Through-hole component installation
  • Wire splicing procedures
  • QFP, J-lead and SOIC/SOT rework
  • MELF and chip rework procedures
  • Conformal coating removal
  • Laminate and printed wiring board circuit repair

Although the course has no official entrance requirements, candidates must have first-rate hand soldering skills. Quality assurance, manufacturing and training supervisors with extensive experience in both assembly rework procedures and teaching are strong candidates for this certification.

IPC Certified Trainer certification is a valued credential recognized by the industry. The biggest gain of the program can be measured in cost savings by repairing expensive electronics assemblies. IPC-7711 and IPC-7721 Certified IPC Trainers also have access to the training materials required to conduct IPC Specialist training.

  • The IPC-7711C/7721C Rework, Modification, and Repair of Electronic Assemblies standard
  • A CD-ROM or digital download with teaching visuals in PowerPoint format illustrating all aspects of the IPC-7711C/7721C document
  • Student handouts that may be printed
  • Artwork and equipment parts list for test/practice kits
  • Common Procedures” open book exams that should be completed on the online Certification Portal
  • Certification reports for this program must be completed on the online Certification Portal

Only Certified IPC Trainers and their companies may buy materials for Application Specialist training from IPC. Certified Trainers may present the course anywhere they want and are allowed to charge a fee for the training.

The IPC-7711C/7721C Certified IPC Trainer certificate is valid for 2 years. Training for re-certification is available at IPC Licensed Certification Centers.
